Personal Essay SPRINGBOARD

Personal Essay SPRINGBOARD

The college essay asks students to do something surprisingly difficult: reflect on their experiences, perspectives, and values with intention and clarity. Most teenagers need support learning how to do that, especially when they’re staring at seven prompts and trying to figure out where to even begin.

The Personal Essay Springboard was designed to make those first steps feel calmer, clearer, and more manageable.

Inside the Springboard, students will:

• Take a perspective-based quiz that helps them identify the Common App prompts most aligned with their voice, strengths, and experiences

• Learn what each prompt is really asking beneath the surface

• Understand the most common pitfalls students fall into and how to avoid them

• Work through guided brainstorming questions that help ideas emerge naturally and with more focus

• Explore real sample openers so starting the essay feels less intimidating

The goal is not to force students into a “perfect story;” rather, I want to help them better understand themselves and approach the essay with more clarity, direction, and confidence. By the end, students feel calmer, more supported, and far more prepared to begin.

This guide is for you if you:

Are a parent who wants to empower your child to write an authentic, standout personal essay without the stress of starting from scratch or falling into common pitfalls.

Are a student who feels overwhelmed by the Common App prompts and needs a clear, manageable way to brainstorm and find your perfect story.

Value an organized approach that makes the essay process feel achievable while highlighting your student’s unique qualities, like their ability to survive, thrive, and contribute.

Want clarity and focus to help your student avoid generic or overdone topics and instead create an essay that is introspective, meaningful, and engaging.

Seek professional guidance from someone who understands what admissions officers are really looking for (I've worked with some of the most competitive colleges in the east) without hiring a full-time coach.

Desire to make the essay process a bit more enjoyable and confidence-building, rather than a chore or a source of frustration.

You need examples and inspiration from real, successful essays to help spark ideas and give clear direction.

You believe in your student’s growth, perspective, and potential to thrive on a college campus.

You appreciate a positive, empowering approach that reassures your student they are enough and their unique perspective will shine through.
