Love Poems, by Nikki Giovanni, holds a special place in my heart. Reading that little book cracked open my own alabaster box that housed my own poetic gift. It was the beginning of a journey that has caused me to see myself more clearly, fully accept that I am who God created me to be, and fall in love with how God sounds coming out of me.
Years ago, I read her poetry and wondered who in the world got ahold of her and what in the world they did to her. And in the years that followed, there have been those who have asked me, “How do you do that? How do you write like that? Where does it come from?” How awesome it is to be in such great company!
There is no angst here. No heartbreak. No aching (except the one love generates). There is no grieving what was lost or could never be.
These are poems of love, sweet love, and all its warm and fuzzy feelings of affection, tenderness, attraction, longing, desire, passion, and those delicious little moments when simply thinking about someone can make all your insides go soft.
