Protect Your Pay - A Northern Ireland Teacher’s Guide to Shared Parental Leave

Most NI teachers on maternity leave don’t realise that Shared Parental Leave can put them on full salary across school holidays, without setting foot in school. Not because the rules won’t allow it, but because nobody tells them how to plan it before the window closes.

And most of the advice online is written for England. NI teachers aren’t on the Burgundy Book. Your maternity pay comes under TNC 2021/1, your SPL under TNC 2015/5, and your school year looks completely different. A plan copied from an English guide could cost you.

This guide is written specifically for teachers in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.

✅ Know exactly when to switch from maternity leave to SPL. Your full TNC maternity pay ladder is explained clearly, including when ending maternity leave early actually pays you more.

✅ Get paid across the holidays that matter in NI. The summer break is the prize: being back at work for it can put you on full salary for around eight weeks. The guide shows you how to plan around it, plus Christmas and Easter, and why February and May are worth very little here.

✅ Map out your whole leave plan week by week. A 5-step method and a full 52-week worked example, using real DE holiday dates, show precisely where your SPL blocks should sit.

✅ Avoid the notice trap that catches people out. Learn why you should send up to three separate continuous notifications, not one combined request, so your plan is yours as of right and not at your principal’s discretion.

✅ Get the NI paperwork right first time. Covers Form TR160 and Form TR162, what the Department of Education’s Teachers’ Pay & Pensions Team needs from you, and the partner declaration.

✅ Protect yourself from the 13-week return condition. Understand when half pay could be clawed back, and what to get confirmed in writing before you send your curtailment notice.

This guide is for you if:

  • You’re a teacher in a grant-aided school in Northern Ireland

  • You’re currently on maternity leave or planning it

  • You want to understand your TNC rights properly before speaking to your principal or the Department

Also inside: all three eligibility tests explained in plain English, SPLIT days, the variation trap, and the common mistakes that cost NI teachers money.

Written by a teacher who’s used SPL herself, and mapped out every date before her baby even arrived.

📄 Instant download. Updated October 2026.

The worked example uses the DE 2025/26 and 2026/27 calendars, but NI principals set their own closure and training days, so the guide tells you exactly what to check. This guide is for teachers on TNC terms, not support staff or Teaching Assistants. It provides general information only and does not constitute legal or employment advice. Please verify details with your employing authority or trade union.
