Scottish Teacher Guide to Shared Parental Leave

Most Scottish teachers on maternity leave don't realise that Shared Parental Leave can be used to receive full salary during school holidays — without going back to work.

This guide explains exactly how to do it. It's written specifically for teachers employed by Scottish local authorities under SNCT terms — not the Burgundy Book, which only applies in England and Wales.

What's inside:

Your full SNCT maternity pay structure explained clearly, so you know exactly when enhanced pay ends and when to make your move. The holiday pay strategy in plain language — how ending an SPL block before a holiday means you're paid at full salary for it, without attending school. A worked example using 2026/27 Scottish term dates showing how to capture Christmas, February break and Easter — worth approximately £1,600 net on a £34,000 salary. Step-by-step application guidance including the 28-day curtailment notice, 8-week SPL block notices, and how to handle your council's 2-week discussion period. The common mistakes that cost Scottish teachers money — and how to avoid them.

This guide is for you if:

  • You're a Scottish teacher employed by a local authority

  • You're currently on maternity leave or planning it

  • You want to understand your SNCT rights properly before speaking to HR

All dates are illustrative. Term dates vary across Scotland's 32 councils — the guide tells you exactly what to check and where.

This guide provides general information only and does not constitute legal or employment advice. Readers are encouraged to verify details with their council's HR team or trade union.
