Soul friend,
If you are here, you may have just lost your beloved pet.
Or you may be watching it come, and you cannot breathe when you think about it.
However you got here, I am so glad you found this.
And I am so sorry.
My dog Brody was mine for thirteen years. He was my confidant through my marriage, through raising my son, through the hardest years of my own healing. When he died, I had nowhere to put any of it. People said they were sorry, and I said thank you, and that was the whole conversation, every single time.
I have been a trauma therapist for over thirty-two years, and I am also a woman in active healing from Complex PTSD. I went looking for a book that understood what that animal actually is to a person like me.
There wasn't one.
It meets you wherever you are.
Whether they died this morning, or you just came home from the vet with news you were not ready for, or you are the one who has to make the decision, or you have been carrying this quietly for thirty years.
Pages for right now, for whatever just happened
A page that names what you might be feeling, so you can find the word for it
What to do when it hits you in the middle of a grocery store
Hospice and comfort care, and how to talk to your children about it
The euthanasia decision, and the guilt that comes with it
The day itself — what you are allowed to ask for, what it costs, and the drive home
When there was no warning at all
The empty house. The bowls, the bed, the leash, the windowsill, the silence
The other animals in your home, because they are grieving too
Anniversaries and the days that ambush you
What the research actually says about why our animals become the safest attachment we have ever had
Why healing has never once required you to stop loving them
Seven worksheets, journal pages, and a full support and resources section
If they were the reason you got out of bed.
If they were the one warm body that never once hurt you.
If you grew up in a house where the people who were supposed to protect you were the ones you needed protecting from, and you found your first safe love in something with fur or feathers or four legs.
If somebody said "it was just a dog."
If you have been grieving alone.
Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds, the one in the tank you talked to every morning before school.
The one from your childhood that nobody ever let you cry about.
And if you are a man reading this, you belong here too.
You may print any page you want, as many times as you need.
The worksheets and journal pages were made to be written on. Print one, print all of them, print the same page forty times over the next two years.
It is yours.
It works on your phone, your tablet, your computer, or on paper beside your bed at three in the morning.
There is no course to complete, no emails to open, no timeline to keep up with.
Nothing here expires and nothing here asks anything of you.
That is not a nice idea — it is how we are built.
Most of us never got that.
There was no service.
Nobody sat across from us and asked what they were like, or how you found each other, or what their name meant.
This book is a room with your name on it, and a chair, and somebody who understands exactly what that beautiful soul was to you.
With love and light and radical healing, 🥹🙏🏻🌿✨🕊️🐾❤️🩹
