Before the Trap Sets: A Parent's Guide to Raising Tweens Who Know Their Worth

The parent companion to Me vs. Me. Simple tools, real phrases, and faith-filled guidance for the years when comparison first takes hold.

Description:

Right now, your voice is one of the loudest in your child's life.

Between 9 and 12, that starts to change. Friends matter more. Bodies start changing. Screens show up. Your child begins measuring themselves against everyone around them: who's fastest, who's smartest, who has the newest phone. The comparison trap hasn't set yet, but it's getting close.

This is the window. And what you say in it matters.

When your child says, "Emma is so much better than me," you might want to answer, "Don't compare yourself to Emma."

It's well meant. But it adds shame to something every brain does automatically.

Try this instead: "Emma's really good! Is that a learn-from feeling or a less-than feeling right now?"

Now your child has a way to sort the feeling instead of hiding it. And you're still the one they bring it to.

Written by Jeremy Sprott, LPC-S, of Transformed Therapy, this 39-page guide walks you through every chapter of the Me vs. Me tween workbook. It doesn't repeat what your child is reading. It shows you what to do while they read it. It draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dr. John Gottman's research on emotion coaching, growth mindset research, and Scripture.

Every chapter includes:

  • What's happening at this age, and why it matters

  • What you might notice at home

  • Say This, Not That: real phrases side by side, with the reason behind them

  • Talk It Over: easy conversation starters for car rides and bedtime

  • A Faith Connection to share Scripture without a lecture

  • One thing to practice this week

  • Your own Notice It → Name It → Transform It reflection

The 9 chapters:

  1. When Your Child Starts Comparing

  2. Rooting Their Worth in God

  3. Ambition Without Comparison

  4. Growing Bodies

  5. Friendship & Belonging

  6. Screens, Stuff & Contentment

  7. Handling Jealousy

  8. Bossy Thoughts & True Thoughts

  9. The 5-Day Challenge as a Family

Two special sections parents ask about most:

  • Talking About Growing Bodies. How to start the conversation early, keep it calm, normalize different timing, and teach body safety.

  • The First Phone Decision. How to decide based on your child and not the class, what to know about age limits on social apps, and how to set up a family media plan.

Also inside:

  • Why 9 to 12 Matters: what's happening developmentally in the tween years

  • The Big Idea behind Me vs. Me: ambition without comparison

  • Connect Before You Correct: the one principle behind every chapter

  • Your own Comparison Check, because kids learn more from what we do than from what we say

  • When to Seek Professional Help, with clear warning signs and crisis resources

  • A one-page "Say This, Not That" quick reference for the fridge

  • A 9-week leader's guide for counselors, children's ministries, and small groups

Perfect for:

  • Parents of kids ages 9 to 12

  • Parents who want to get ahead of comparison before the teen years

  • Counselors and therapists working with children and families

  • Children's ministry leaders and parent small groups

  • Homeschool families and co-ops

Better together: This guide pairs chapter by chapter with Me vs. Me: A Tween's Guide to Seeing Yourself the Way God Does. Your child works through the workbook while you work through this guide, and you meet in the middle for the "Talk It Over" pages.

Format: Instant digital download. 39-page PDF, US Letter size. Printer-friendly, so it's easy to print at home.

This guide is an educational resource and is not a substitute for professional counseling or medical care.

Your voice still matters most right now.
