I Remember Dreading Homework Time.

My daughter struggled academically for years due to ADHD. Today, she is thriving in college.

I would explain something to my daughter over and over again, and no matter how many times I explained it, she just didn't seem to understand.

Then we'd finally have that moment when it seemed like she got it.

I'd think:

But then we'd come back to it the next day...

And it was as if the information had disappeared.

She would look at something we had just spent hours working on the night before like she had never seen or heard it before.

And there we were again.

Back to the same frustration.

Eventually, I Realized We Needed a Different Approach.

I had to stop looking at every homework struggle as simply:

“Why doesn't she understand this?”

“Why can't she remember this?”

“Why is this taking so long?”

“We just went over this yesterday!”

And start asking:

“What does her ADHD brain need from me right now?”

That shift changed the way I approached homework.

I began paying more attention to things like how she started, how much information she was trying to process at once, her environment, the way I prompted her, when she needed a break, and even my own frustration and tone.

Because I learned something important:

Getting frustrated with her wasn't helping her understand.

In fact, when my frustration increased, her frustration increased too.

And once she became overwhelmed, anxious or emotional, homework became even harder.

We didn't need more battles.

We needed better strategies.
