Hotels and resorts may call a room accessible.
But that does not tell you whether the room will actually work for your body, wheelchair, transfer needs, shower needs, caregiver support, Hoyer lift, or mobility device.
The access failures that happen everyday, including:
The room was only requested, not guaranteed
Confirmed a roll-in shower. Arrived to a bathtub.
The bed is too high to transfer
Discovering the toilet is behind a narrow separate door
The bathroom layout does not allow transfer
The shower setup is unsafe
The sink has no knee clearance
The shower chair is unstable
Being told, “You can check when you arrive”
Receiving a shower chair with no back, no arms, or poor stability
Booking through a third-party site and losing accessibility notes
Relying on staff who have not measured or verified the room
The property route blocks you from the amenities you expected to use
That is why the word “accessible” is not enough.
I traveled from Miami to an all-inclusive beachfront resort with my family.
When I arrived, the room was inaccessible.
The bed was too high.
The toilet area had a separate narrow door my wheelchair could not enter.
The shower had the same problem. And, no shower chair.
I went to the front desk. They told me no accessible room would be available during my stay.
I asked for a manager.
He pointed out that I had a poolside room.
But a poolside room does not solve a wheelchair access problem.
The next day, I was moved to another room. It was better, but still not right.
The shower bench was too high.
The water controls were out of reach.
The portable shower chair felt unstable when wet.
I lost comfort, sleep, shower access, family time, beach access, dignity, and safety.
The lesson was clear:
Do not wait until check-in to find out whether the room works.
Verify before you book.
This is about avoiding preventable access problems before you are standing at the front desk with luggage, family, and no workable room.
Use this before you book, before you pay, before you arrive, and before you trust the words “accessible room.”

I have been a wheelchair user for 50 years.
I am also a two-time Paralympian and travel access analyst who has spent decades navigating hotel rooms, resorts, bathrooms, beaches, front desks, and access failures that should have been prevented before arrival.
This system did not come from theory.
It came from lived experience.
From someone who has been in the chair, in the room, and at the front desk asking for what should have been verified before check-in.
