đŤ RESPIRATORY MED-SURG NIGHTâ˘
From Confusion to Clinical Judgment
Struggling with respiratory content? You donât need to memorize another hundred signs and symptoms. You need to understand whatâs happening to your patient.
If COPD, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, and respiratory failure all start running together when youâre studying, this class is for you.
Maybe you recognize the disease, but when the NCLEX asks what the nurse should do FIRST, you find yourself stuck between two answers.
Thatâs what weâre going to work on.
Respiratory Med-Surg Night⢠is a LIVE, interactive, nurse-led learning experience designed to help you understand the lungs, recognize important clinical findings, and connect respiratory conditions to nursing priorities.
Weâre going to start with the foundation, build your understanding of the disease processes, and then put that knowledge to work through NCLEX-style questions.
Because nursing is the trade; critical thinking is the skill.
đŤ WHAT WEâLL COVER
PART 1: UNDERSTANDING THE LUNGS
Before you can understand whatâs going wrong, you need to understand how the respiratory system is supposed to work.
Weâll break down:
Basic respiratory anatomy and physiology
How air travels through the respiratory system
Ventilation versus oxygenation
How oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged
What happens when the lungs cannot oxygenate the blood or eliminate carbon dioxide effectively
Why respiratory problems affect the heart, brain, and other organs
The goal is to understand the foundation so the diseases actually begin to make sense.
PART 2: RESPIRATORY DISEASES MADE SIMPLE
Weâre going to connect high-yield respiratory conditions to their hallmark findings.
Including:
Asthma â bronchoconstriction, wheezing, and airflow obstruction
COPD â air trapping, prolonged expiration, and chronic airflow limitation
Pneumonia â infection, inflammation, and impaired gas exchange
Pulmonary embolism â sudden dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and impaired pulmonary perfusion
Pneumothorax â collapsed lung and unilateral decreased breath sounds
Tension pneumothorax â increasing intrathoracic pressure and obstructive shock
Pleural effusion â fluid collecting around the lungs
Atelectasis â alveolar collapse
ARDS â severe oxygenation impairment
Weâre not going to spend hours memorizing every detail of every disease.
Weâre going to focus on what makes each condition recognizable, WHY those findings occur, and what the nurse needs to understand.
PART 3: RESPIRATORY ASSESSMENT & NURSING PRIORITIES
Now that we understand whatâs happening inside the patient, we need to know what to do with that information.
Weâll connect:
Normal versus abnormal respiratory findings
Breath sounds and what they tell us
Early versus late signs of respiratory deterioration
Oxygenation and respiratory interventions
Airway and breathing emergencies
Priority assessments and nursing interventions
Expected findings versus findings requiring immediate action
PART 4: NCLEX QUESTIONS & CLINICAL JUDGMENT
This is where we bring everything together.
Weâll work through NCLEX-style questions and patient scenarios, focusing on:
Recognizing and analyzing cues
Connecting symptoms to disease processes
Identifying the most concerning patient findings
Understanding what the nurse should do FIRST
Prioritization and patient safety
Eliminating distractors
Choosing between two seemingly correct answers
Applying the P.E.A.C.E. Methodâ˘
Youâll see how understanding the patient can change the way you approach the question.
