Phase 1: Intake, Interviews, and Consent
Identify at least 2 stakeholders to interview (e.g., parent, teacher, RBT, caregiver)
List two stakeholders involved in the child’s daily routines (e.g., caregiver, classroom aide, RBT).
Create brief mock bios or role descriptions for each stakeholder and explain why their input is valuable to the FBA process.
For each stakeholder, write 2–3 specific questions that are tailored to their role in the child’s environment.
Phase 2: Direct Observation and Data Collection
Write 10–12 open-ended interview questions that help identify what happens before, during, and after the behavior. Be sure to include at least two questions about setting events (like sleep, illness, or medication), reinforcement patterns, and any past strategies the caregiver has tried. Include questions that help you understand the behavior from the parent’s perspective (e.g., “What do you think the behavior means?”).
Provide a short explanation for why each question is included and what information it’s meant to uncover.
Phase 3: Data Analysis and Hypothesis Development
Use session data or mock data to create line graphs, bar graphs, and scatterplots using Excel or Google Sheets.
Include baseline and intervention phases and label all axes and conditions.
Practice summarizing what each visual shows in 1–2 sentences.
Analyze ABC data and daily behavior logs to identify patterns in antecedents and consequences.
Conduct a peer review or “function hypothesis defense".
Present your proposed function hypothesis and graphed data to a peer, supervisor, or mock review panel.
Defend your reasoning, respond to questions, and refine your hypothesis based on their feedback.
