There are so many reasons I’m excited about growing moringa, and honestly, the more I learn about this tree, the more possibilities I see. From an environmental perspective, moringa is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree that can thrive in warm climates without demanding enormous amounts of water. In colder climates, it can be grown as an annual.
The leaves are packed with nutrients, including protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They can be eaten fresh, cooked into meals or dried into powder. The young seed pods (drumsticks) are edible and the mature seeds are used to filter water or pressed for oil used in skincare products.
Moringa grows fast and can be harvested every 60-90 days. They can be planted close together for leaf harvesting and wider for flower and seed production. They can also be propagated easily by cutting off a branch and planting it, making moringa one of the top crops to grow to help increase food security.
Growing moringa can create income through fresh leaves, powders, teas, seeds, oils and other products, which means one tree can be part of a much bigger ecosystem of local farmers, makers and small businesses.
I'm not just growing trees; I'm growing food, beauty, resilience and opportunity at the same time.
