PERSONAL NETWORK AUDIT
Participant Workbook · Sixth Edition · PDF · $75 USD
A self-guided structural read of what your relational network actually costs you, and what it may be costing the people on the other end.
Burnout is often a network extraction problem. You occupy a position where more flow is pulled from your node than the network returns, and the cost registers in your energy, attention, and physiology before you have language for it. Standard advice points at the interior. The audit points at the architecture.
The Personal Network Audit reads your active relationships as a directed, weighted network. You are one node. Every relationship is an edge. Every edge carries a direction, a magnitude, and a structural signature, and the workbook teaches you to read all three.
Every edge also has two ends. The Sixth Edition asks you to read each relationship from the other person’s side as well as your own: where you may be drawing more than you return, whether that lean is agreed and visible to both of you, and what you learn when you stop imagining their answer and ask for it.
What you’ll do
Nine modules, each adding a layer to the read. A core pass takes about ninety minutes; the full pass is honest work across two sittings.
Module I · Network Inventory. List and number every person you currently transact with at least weekly, then draw the map: your edges placed on a ringed canvas, with lines between the people who know each other independently of you.
Module II · Edge Assessment. Score five separate layers per edge: outflow, inflow, felt cost, signal quality, and the dynamic that repeats across encounters. Anchored 1 to 5 scales keep your scores consistent from one sitting to the next.
Module III · Cost Calculation. Compute net cost and volume per edge, place each tie on the balance-intensity map, flag the noisy edges, and annotate your drawn map so the extraction pattern becomes visible at a glance.
Module IV · Structural Position. Locate yourself: betweenness, brokerage (do you open gaps or hold them?), and the invisible labor that goes unmeasured because it goes unacknowledged, including the labor others carry for you. Then read every edge that leans your way from the other end, and put one direct question to one real person to see how far your guess was from their answer.
Module V · Summary and Function. Aggregate every layer into one summary, including the count of edges where your numbers and your body disagree and the edges that lean toward you without being agreed and visible, and distinguish the functions you chose from the ones the system installed.
Module VI · Forces on the Map. Read the formation forces that assembled much of your network before you chose anything: homophily, triadic closure, shared foci, and social contagion, with the research on each.
Module VII · Interpretation. Read your results against published work on chronic resource asymmetry, bridge cost, brokerage orientation, unrecognized labor, and the egocentric bias that makes your own contributions easier to remember than other people’s.
Module VIII · Synthesis. Sit-with questions, with space to write, designed to be carried over days rather than answered in minutes.
Module IX · Movement. Turn one structural finding into one concrete behavioral change, using implementation intentions, staged change, and the network conditions that make change run downhill instead of up.

What it is, and what it isn’t
The audit integrates published research with author-developed constructs from the research conducted at the lab. Inline citations appear at every conceptual anchor. Where the workbook combines literature into a unified picture, that picture is the author’s working synthesis, flagged on the page where it appears.
The scoring thresholds (active-edge cadence, the bridge-node reading, the edge classification bands) are structured-reflection heuristics, named as such throughout. They organize your attention; they measure nothing about you that a clinician or a validated instrument would recognize, and they are not meant to.
The audit is separate from therapy, clinical assessment, coaching, and validated psychometric testing. It is a structured reflection tool for personal use.
Important: please read before purchasing
This workbook is developed by Hidden Information Labs Institute (HILI), a Canadian federal non-profit, for personal reflection and educational purposes only.
It is not diagnostic. It is not psychotherapy, psychological counseling, psychiatric care, clinical assessment, or diagnosis of any kind. No score, classification, or reading in this workbook identifies a disorder in you, and no reading identifies any person in your network as abusive, disordered, or well. The instrument describes network configurations, and configurations only.
It does not create a professional relationship. Completing this audit does not establish a therapeutic, coaching, or professional relationship with Hidden Information Labs Institute or any of its representatives, and it does not treat, prevent, or address any mental health condition.
It is not a substitute for care. If you are experiencing significant psychological distress, crisis, or symptoms of a mental health condition, please seek care from a qualified and licensed professional. The workbook itself flags the specific structural patterns that warrant professional support rather than self-guided work, and directs you accordingly. The one exercise that involves speaking with another person tells you which relationships to leave out of it.
Your responses stay yours. The workbook is completed on paper or on your own device. Nothing you write or draw is collected, stored, or reviewed by HILI or the author.
