Conflicting Advice? How to Decide What's Useful to You

By Tuesday night, you'd decided. You were taking the job.

On Wednesday at lunch, your sister said, "Are you sure? You've only just got your evenings back." Now you're staring at your sandwich, and the decision that felt settled twelve hours ago has come apart.

You asked people for help with how to make a decision. What you got was conflicting advice, and the strange part is that every opinion made sense when you heard it. You can explain what your sister thinks, what your friend thinks and what your old boss thinks. Ask what you think and you draw a blank.

That doesn't mean you're bad at deciding. Each person you ask is answering a slightly different question. One is thinking about what you could gain, another about what you could lose, and a third about the time the same thing happened to them. Until you separate those, you end up starting over after every conversation, even when nobody has told you anything new.

You don't have to ignore them, and you don't have to find the one person who settles it. You just need to know what each piece of advice is actually giving you.

Sort the conflicting advice

Say you're weighing up a new job. One friend says, "Take it, it's a big step up." Another says, "I wouldn't. You finally have some flexibility."

They might not disagree about the job at all. They just care about different things. So before you ask a third person to break the tie, sort what you've heard into three piles.

Something to check. "That job means a lot of overnight travel." This is a detail that could change everything, so find out where it came from. How often would you travel, and how much notice would you get?

Something someone values. "I'd never give up that much flexibility." It might matter to you too, but how much depends on your life. Ask yourself what losing it would do to an ordinary week. Their priority could fit you perfectly, or only partly.

A prediction. "You'll regret turning it down." Ask what makes them say that. Do they see a specific opportunity you'd lose, or are they imagining how they would feel?

One comment can land in more than one pile, and that's fine. The point is to turn "she thinks I shouldn't" into something you can use: a fact to confirm, a priority to weigh or a worry to look into.

Ask for the story, not the verdict

"What would you do?" is a fine opener. The answer only helps once you know what's behind it.

Suppose you're thinking about moving cities, and a friend who did it says, "Don't. It's lonely." Don't argue and don't panic. Ask, "What made it lonely? What do you wish you'd checked first?"

Maybe she worked from home, knew nobody nearby and hadn't realised how expensive flights back would be. That's useful. You can look into how you'd meet people, what visits would cost and how you'd keep your closest friendships going. Her experience becomes a checklist instead of a warning.

It works for personal decisions too. Say you're wondering whether to tell a friend that her jokes about your job have started to sting. One person says, "Tell her." Another says, "Leave it, you'll make it awkward." Instead of polling a third person, find someone who's had a conversation like that and ask, "What did you say, and how did it go?" Their answer won't predict how your friend reacts. It might give you a first sentence, though, or something to brace for.

Pick the person to match the question. Your best friend may know you inside out and know nothing about visas. Someone who's been through it may have the facts but no idea what matters to you. For contracts, money or anything with legal weight, go to someone qualified. A friend's gut feeling isn't a substitute.

Work out where you stand

Once you've sorted the useful bits, say where you are, even if it's rough. Finish these three sentences, out loud if you can:

  • "Right now, I'm leaning towards…"

  • "What matters most to me is…"

  • "What I still don't understand is…"

An example: "I'm leaning towards the job with less travel. Being home on weeknights matters more to me than the title. What I don't know yet is whether I'd learn anything there."

Now the next conversation has a purpose. You can ask someone about learning and growth, instead of reopening the whole decision.

If you're not leaning either way, don't force it. Try "I haven't chosen, but whatever I pick has to work with…" and fill in the real constraint, like your kids' school run or your savings.

When someone's advice does shift you, ask what shifted. If it's new information, check it. If it's a priority you'd overlooked, add it to your list. If you simply feel less sure because they sounded certain, find the specific worry underneath before you act on the feeling.

You can change your mind because you learnt something. Someone else's confidence on its own isn't a reason to switch.

Decide what you need next

Before you talk to anyone else, decide what you want from them.

If you're missing a fact, ask one person one direct question, like "How many nights a month would I really be away?" If the next step involves a particular person, like the friend with the jokes, it may be time to talk to her instead of rehearsing it with five other people. And if you just need company in it, say so: "I'm not asking you to decide for me. I'd just like you to listen while I work out where I am."

If you honestly have the information and nothing's left to ask, another opinion won't help. Pick a time to come back to it, within any real deadline, and let it rest until then.

When the opinions keep replaying

Sometimes you've done all of this and your head still runs the conversations on a loop. Your sister says one thing, your friend answers it and you argue both sides while brushing your teeth. What you need then isn't another recommendation. It's a bit of quiet to hear yourself.

Decision Paralysis: an Inner Companion is a 16-minute guided meditation made for that moment. It starts with slow breathing, then walks you into a quiet house where you can set the decision down for a while. There are pauses along the way to notice what matters to you. Then you come back to the choice and ask what your next step could be. You don't have to think up the questions, because they're guided for you.

It won't make the choice for you or promise certainty. Your next step might be a conversation, a fact to look up or more time for a clear reason.
