Should You Quit After Putting So Much In?

Should You Quit After Putting So Much In?

How to Know When to Quit After You've Put So Much In

Imagine opening an email asking whether you want to renew your course for another 6 months. Your first thought is how good it would feel to have Tuesday and Thursday evenings to yourself again. Then you remember the $600 you paid, the assignments you stayed up to finish, and how excited you were when you told everyone you'd signed up.

If I stop now, what was all that for?

"Never give up" is terrible advice when it stops you asking whether you still want the thing.

There's a name for letting the time, money or effort you've already spent tip you towards spending more: the sunk cost fallacy. Suppose that first $600 is non-refundable. You can't get it back either way. What you can still decide is whether the next 6 months are worth another $600 and 2 evenings a week.

Try finishing this sentence: "From today, continuing is worthwhile because…"

"One more module gets me the qualification I need for work I still want to do" is a good answer. So is "I love what I'm learning, even though this part is hard." "I've already spent $600" only tells you why stopping hurts.

Is this a rough patch, or do you no longer want it?

Go back to the last part you actually enjoyed. What were you doing? What changed after that? Maybe you loved the practical work and now you're slogging through theory. If you know when that stretch ends and you're looking forward to what follows, that's a hard patch with an end in sight.

Now imagine a better tutor, a lighter timetable and a month to catch up. Would you want to go back? If the answer is still no, look at the destination. Perhaps the course is fine and you've learned you don't want the work it leads to. That's useful, and it deserves a say.

One caution: if everything feels flat, not just this commitment, the problem may be exhaustion or low mood rather than a verdict on the goal. Think about a week when you had more energy. Did you want to go back then? If you've dreaded Tuesdays even on your better weeks, that tells you something. If the course only started feeling unbearable when work got frantic, that's worth knowing before the renewal date.

Then put something real on the other side of the comparison. Those evenings could mean regular dinners with your family, a shift you'd like to take, or two nights when nobody needs anything from you. That's the opportunity cost.

What if quitting means giving up the person you thought you'd become?

Money is the easy case. Harder is the degree you're halfway through, the career you trained for, or the dream you've described to people for a decade. Here the real cost of stopping is often identity. Try two lines:

  • "If I stop, the practical consequence is…"

  • "If I stop, I'm afraid it means I'm someone who…"

"I'd lose the qualification" gives you something to weigh. "My family will think I've wasted my degree" gives you a different question: if they were completely supportive, would you still want the career?

Changing your mind after learning something real is not the same as failing.

What if other people are counting on you?

Say you've spent 4 years building a business with a friend. You have two employees, customers have paid deposits, and your co-founder wants you both to invest more.

Separate two questions. What have I already agreed to do? Customer work, wages and your arrangement with your co-founder shape how and when you could leave. Do I want to commit more? That's a separate decision. It lets you say, "Here's how I'd finish what we've promised. Now let's talk about whether we take on more."

Ask what else those resources could do. If your share of the next investment is the savings that would let you take 3 months to find a different job, put that on the page.

And find an outsider with nothing invested in either outcome. Ask: "Which part of my plan am I assuming will work? What would you want to check?"

If you want another six weeks, decide what you'll learn

"Let's give it six weeks" only helps if you know what you're testing.

Suppose you still like doing the work, but you dread having to sell it. If your co-founder wants to take on sales for 6 weeks, agree how much work needs to come in, how many evenings you're willing to give it, and when you'll both decide whether the new split works.

Now "give it 6 weeks" means changing something and seeing what happens. And if you already know you wouldn't stay even if the trial went well, what would the 6 weeks be for?

When you’ve done the thinking and you’re still stuck

You’ve worked out what it would cost to stay and what you’d give up by leaving. Then the thought you started with comes back. If I stop now, what was all that for? You picture quitting and wishing you’d carried on. You picture staying and wishing you’d left sooner. You could spend another evening doing this.

That’s the moment I made Decision Paralysis for. It’s a 16-minute guided meditation for people stuck going over an important choice. I guide you to set the decision down for a moment and think back to a choice you made before you knew how it would turn out. You’ve had to work things out as you went along before. Remembering how you did that helps you come back to this choice, hear what you want and work out what to do next, even while some doubt is still there.

Before you close this tab

Read your answer to "From today, continuing is worthwhile because…" again. If it names something you still want, look at what it would take to get there. If it rests on an assumption, check that one thing. And if the only reason left is what you've already spent, you're free to start planning how to finish well.

Still going over the same decision?
