GLP and NLA: Analyzing the Claims and Evidence

GLP and NLA: Analyzing the Claims and Evidence

$40

3-hour pre-recorded webinar available through December 31, 2026

Gestalt Language Processing and the Natural Language Acquisition Protocol have seen a recent surge in popularity. While appreciating the ways that GLP and NLA have spread awareness of neurodiversity and the meaningfulness of echolalia, I will describe additional approaches to treatment as well as gaps in the evidence and conceptual underpinnings of NLA. Specifically, we will learn about studies from the field of psycholinguistics that have investigated language processing in autism. We will discuss ways to implement evidence-based practice when there is a lack of clinical research to address a particular clinical question. Finally, we will identify research-aligned ways to assess and support communication development in children who use delayed echolalia.

Upon completion of the course, you may request a certificate of Professional Development Hours. Please allow up to a week for me to email your certificate.

Intended audience

The intended audience for this course is speech-language pathologists and related professionals, but anyone who is interested in welcome to join.

Disagreements

In the interest of transparency and promoting healthy debate and dialogue, I am offering the opportunity for anyone who takes the course to have their disagreement or an additional viewpoint represented. After taking the course, you may submit a written reply up to 2000 words or a video reply up to 5 minutes. If your response does not contain blatant falsehoods, I will add it to the course with my commentary.

FAQs

How is this course different from your Instagram account (@language_processing) and website (www.gestaltlanguageprocessing.org)?
The course is more in-depth than my website, but covers similar content with a similar tone. I go more in depth in the research methods of language processing studies to show what the relevant evidence looks like. Compared to the information on my Instagram account, the course is organized as a coherent whole and ties together the main ideas from my account with additional information about what I do recommend for assessment and treatment.

Do you offer group purchasing discounts?
Groups of 5 or more can email kathleen@kathleenoppenheimer.com to inquire about group discounts. You do not need to work together - find four friends or strangers and buy together for a discount! Current students (undergrad or graduate) and parents who do not hold a clinical degree may also contact me about discounted rates.

Do you accept purchase orders?
Yes. Email me at kathleen@kathleenoppenheimer.com if you would like to pay by purchase order.

Will you add more to this course?
At this time, I do not have plans to add additional materials to the course, although I may add reply videos and documentation from viewers who disagree or have additional viewpoints that they think should be represented alongside my information.

How long will I have access to the course?
You will have access until December 31, 2026. I hope to have an updated version of this webinar available for ASHA CEUs on another platform beginning in December. Please note that access to the new version will be a separate purchase; your current purchase will not transfer to the new platform. If you would like to receive very infrequent email announcements about other ways to learn from me, please sign up for my newsletter: https://bhi-language-processing.beehiiv.com

What if I have questions about course material?
The best way to ask your questions is by emailing me (kathleen@kathleenoppenheimer.com) or sending me a message on Instagram (@language_processing). If you wish for a more extensive discussion, please consider booking a 1:1 consultation with me.

What sources of evidence do you cite in this course?
I cite extensive scientific research and provide a reference list for each course module. While there is more to evidence-based practice than simply knowing the research, knowing the research is a necessary component of EBP that will help you use your clinical expertise to think critically about clinical questions, and will help you better inform your clients about their options so that they can provide their perspectives.

Note on testimonials: Everyone who completes the course is asked to provide feedback: what they liked and what would make the course better. Participants decide if I can share their feedback or keep it private. I share all feedback, positive and negative, when I have permission to do so. I do not provide any incentives for providing feedback, and everyone quoted paid for the course unless otherwise noted.

Laura, Pediatric SLP

Positive feedback: "This course explores claims about GLP and NLA and encourages clinicians to understand what practices are unique to NLA and what practices are part of other evidence-based responsive approaches. It provides evidence to guide clinicians on which aspects of NLA to embrace and which aspects are not supported by evidence. Finally, it provides alternatives to NLA that are aligned with the relationship-based approach to therapy that resonates with so many clinicians." Suggestions for improvement: "N/A"

SLP in Hawai'i

Positive feedback: "I really liked the breakdown of the different alternatives to NLA. I loved the section on EMT; I was already using a lot of the strategies but now I have a name to it." Suggestion for improvement: "I think the course is great! I would love to hear more about the different theories of language acquisition, but I know that it might be above and beyond what most people need."

Alyssa Croll, MS, CCC-SLP

"It was super easy to follow but really went in depth with the research. So many great takeaways for my own practice. I love the dive into the evidence base behind those already tried and true therapy practices. You so clearly and respectfully articulated all of the concerns I have with the dialogue around NLA/GLP." Suggestions for improvement: N/A

Maira Ambris

Positive Feedback: "I found the entire course to be very informative and applicable. Kathleen explained, compared, and summarized the most current research in a very clinically applicable and relevant way. It is rare to find a course (so far in my career) that provides such an in depth, yet approachable examination of what evidence there is for language development and the nuance that we as clinicians must critically assess based on individual factors, family, culture, and linguistic diversity." Suggestions for improvement: "I'm not sure of any ways to improve. Perhaps just another opportunity and a further discussion or collaboration with researchers, clinicians, and individuals who are culturally and linguistically diverse as it appears that this area of evidence, like many, is limited when considering minority or beyond mono linguistic/English speaking populations. I believe that more courses should follow your layout and approach to disseminating information."

"Excellent course with practical takeaways. Material was presented in an easy to understand and meaningful way with reference to research throughout the presentation." Room for improvement: "I would love a more in depth training on EMT and perhaps JASPER"

Alex R., MA, CCC-SLP

You continue to demonstrate professionalism while balancing the importance of true evidence-based practice. GLP is such a hot topic in our field right now, but your knowledge and ability to summarize/organize that knowledge in a way that other SLPs can understand is incredible. I pride myself on being a neurodiversity affirming SLP, being neurodivergent myself. We have to continue to look at research from an objective point of view. Research does not have to be neurodiversity affirming, but we as clinicians should be.
