Parenting Plan Template

A clear, child focused plan for separated parents to complete together

When you separate, the hardest part is often the hundred small questions that follow. Who has the children at Christmas? Where do handovers happen? What happens if one of you wants to move? Left unspoken, those questions turn into arguments.

This print and write template puts the answers in one place, so you aren't renegotiating the same things every month. Complete it together if you can, work through it with a mediator or solicitor, or fill it in alone as a draft. It's built to be specific, calm and child focused.

What's inside (34 pages)

  • Guidance on how to use it, what courts look for, and key terms in plain English
  • How to approach the conversation with the other parent, with ground rules and opening lines
  • A "specific, not vague" page and a fully worked example, so you can see what a completed plan looks like
  • 20 sections to fill in:
    • child and parent details and living arrangements
    • the regular weekly contact schedule, missed time and lateness
    • holidays and special occasions, with a year holiday planner
    • handovers and communication
    • decision making, illness, emergencies and childcare
    • shared costs and extras
    • family, pets and special people, and technology and screen time
    • your child's voice, safeguarding and dispute resolution
    • review dates, additional agreements and signatures
  • Guidance on how arrangements change as children grow
  • A page on what to do if the plan isn't being followed
  • A one page plan at a glance to share with school, family or a childminder
  • An "after you've signed" checklist and a printable review log

Who it's for
Separated parents who can work together, directly or through a solicitor or mediator, to agree arrangements for their children.

Good to know

  • It's a digital template (PDF) to print and write on. Print as many copies of any page as you need.
  • It isn't suitable as a joint exercise if there is ongoing risk to your safety. The pack explains what to do instead.
  • A parenting plan isn't legally binding on its own. The template explains how to ask a court to make it an order.
  • It's written for England. It's a template and general information, not legal advice.
