You know what it's like to speak the language everyone else thinks is weird.
Long words. Lots of endings. Sounds other people struggle to pronounce. And a language surrounded by languages that seem to have very little in common with yours.
And then, somewhere up north, there's Finnish 👋
No, Finnish and Hungarian are NOT mutually understandable. And no, I'm not going to pretend I know Hungarian 😅
But I am a native Finnish speaker with a Master's degree in Finnish language – so I can show you Finnish from the inside. And then you can decide how familiar it actually looks and sounds.
This whole thing started with my Hungarian followers in my social media channels.
Thousands of you found my Finnish language videos and started commenting things like:
“That sounds Hungarian!”
“We have something like that too!”
“Are you sure you're not secretly Hungarian?”
You sent me Hungarian names and places to pronounce. You challenged me with tongue twisters. You pointed out familiar words and similarities between our languages.
Some of you even told me that teachers have shown my videos in class when talking about the language relationship between Finnish and Hungarian.
So I thought:
Okay, Hungarians. Let's make something just for you 💕
Actually I wouldn't even call this a course. I call this an experience.
You don't need to know Finnish. You don't need to study grammar beforehand. And I'm definitely not going to teach you Hungarian – you know considerably more about that than I do 😂
Instead, think of this as a fun little journey into Finnish language through Hungarian ears.
You'll get a quick introduction to what Finnish looks and sounds like – our alphabet, pronunciation and a few other typical features – with simple examples.
And then we actually play with the language.
Hear Finnish. Guess words. Compare languages. Try pronouncing things yourself.
... and decide: how familiar does Finnish actually feel to a Hungarian?
🔤 Discover the Finnish alphabet and how we pronounce our letters.
👀 Explore surprising similarities between Finnish and Hungarian, from familiar words to shared linguistic features.
👂 Put your Hungarian ears to the test with a fun Finnish listening challenge!
🌍 Hear international words pronounced the Finnish way – some might sound surprisingly familiar!
🧳 Learn useful Finnish survival phrases for your next trip to Finland.
🎬 Hear a Finn pronounce famous names, brands and movie titles – with a Finnish twist!
🧐 Watch a Finn tackle Hungarian names and places, and discover how Finnish cities are pronounced.
🤣 Enjoy hilarious Hungarian and Finnish tongue twisters – and watch a Finn struggle!
🗣️ Try Finnish yourself with Listen & Repeat exercises along the way.
Over 3 hours of experiencing the Finnish language together.
And here's a little extra twist! Throughout the experience, you'll also hear how for example Hungarian cities, names and tongue twisters would sound if we pronounced them using Finnish pronunciation rules. Some might sound surprisingly familiar… and others? Well, you'll hear for yourself! 😂
This might be my favourite part.
I didn't sit in Finland and try to guess what Hungarians would find interesting.
I asked you.
A huge part of this experience was built from the hundreds of comments, questions, names, words, jokes and challenges my Hungarian followers sent me.
So this isn't really “Here's what a Finn thinks you should learn.”
It's more like:
“Here's what Hungarians wanted to know about Finnish – so let's find out together.”
And although this was created primarily as a fun experience for curious Hungarians, teachers are welcome to use it as an additional resource too – for listening, comparing the languages, pronunciation or simply getting students curious about Finnish.
Hungarian can sometimes feel like it's sitting on its own little linguistic island in the middle of Europe.
Finnish isn't Hungarian's twin. You won't suddenly understand Finnish after watching this.
But every now and then you might hear a sound, recognize a pattern or see a word and think:
“…wait a minute.” 👀
And that's what I want you to experience for yourself.
Maybe Finnish language starts to feel a little less foreign.
Maybe Hungarian language feels a little less alone.
Or maybe you just get to laugh at a Finnish woman desperately trying to pronounce Hungarian tongue twisters.
All outcomes are acceptable 😂
No previous Finnish required.
Just come curious.
Listen. Compare. Guess. Repeat. Laugh.
And see for yourself how familiar Finnish can sometimes feel.
Made in Finland 💙 Heavily influenced by Hungary. Questionable Hungarian pronunciation included.
