This is a review of my experience with Jennifer Salzman ("Rebel Without a Drink") as a coach and guide for me in eliminating alcohol use. I'll split this into two parts; first my thoughts on Jennifer's methodology, and second about Jennifer herself, and her implementation of that methodology. About her process: Jennifer's approach to disempowering alcohol was really surprising to me. I had always assumed that cutting back or stopping drinking would be very similar to dieting as a means to achieve permanent weight loss; a long, difficult, guilt-driven, and ultimately futile process, exemplified by AA and other "12 step" programs. However her technique is totally different in the following ways: It does not depend primarily on "willpower", and guilt/shame is not used as a motivator. Instead, it's mostly based on two things: First, mindfulness (i.e. not drinking on "autopilot", but instead learning to be very conscious of precisely what you're feeling before, during, and after you take your first drink.) And secondly, logic (thinking very pointedly about whether those feelings you have during and after drinking are positive ones, and deciding for yourself whether or not you want to feel them again.) This approach worked really well for me. As an ADHD'er, I live much of my life in a not-very-mindful state, and learning how to focus on my feelings at the moment of drinking was very new, and ultimately pretty powerful. About Jennifer: I ran across Jennifer on Tiktok. She's an ADHD'er, and a former drinker. I reached out to her because I have ADHD, and I suspected (rightly) that someone who understands that complex state of being would be much more likely to understand me too. Jennifer is perceptive, empathetic, and relentlessly positive. She doesn't position herself as a therapist, but as someone who has travelled the road her clients are about to embark upon, and can say from personal experience what it felt like. I relate to her more like a knowledgeable and trusted friend than as a service provider or healthcare professional. Long story short, this worked very well for me. The urge to drink still hits me now and again, but those urges don't scare me; I have the tools to deal with them, and they are getting rarer and less powerful with each passing week. I will soon regard drinking in the same way I do smoking cigarettes; as something I used to do, but have no interest in ever doing again. J.D.

Jennifer really saved my life. For years, I struggled with alcohol and the overwhelming challenges of ADHD. I had no coping skills, just an excess of awareness without the ability to process my feelings I felt completely lost. Working with Jennifer changed everything. At my worst, I was consuming 200 units of alcohol per week, but now, I’ve only had three days of drinking in the past two months. The transformation has been incredible. I used to think beer was my problem—but it wasn’t. It was about consumption, escape, fear, and my inability to navigate life’s challenges. The tools I’ve learned have given me the ability to quiet my mind, and now, resisting alcohol feels natural rather than impossible. My expectations were not only met but completely exceeded. I was blown away. Breakthroughs That Changed My Life: -Where thoughts go, energy flows -The brain doesn’t recognize the new path yet—it’s okay to feel uncomfortable -Tapping techniques -Allowing myself to feel emotions instead of pushing them away If you’re looking for tools to rewire your brain and break free from patterns you’ve been stuck in for years, I highly recommend working with Jennifer. This process has truly been life-changing.

Jennifer is an excellent coach and mentor. I am a working professional and although my life was mostly in order, I found myself drinking way more than usual and way more than I wanted to be drinking over a 6-12 month period. After talking to Jennifer the very first day, I was sure about what I needed to do. I was not looking to stop drinking alcohol altogether, but just to change my relationship with it and drink much less. She helped me see the reasons I was drinking so much and how drinking was affecting many aspects of my life of which I wasn’t even aware. She was kind and compassionate, and most importantly, non-judgmental. She also helped me be more compassionate and less judgmental toward myself. After two months of abstinence, I felt that my thoughts about alcohol had been altered to a point where I was able to have one or two drinks without wanting a third. It has changed the way I feel, both physically and emotionally, and I now have a confidence in myself for taking this step to improve my life. I am very grateful to Jennifer and I know she is always there if I am having a difficult time. Thank you Jen!
