Reading Roots: Ama and the Traveling Cloth 3rd-5th

$20

Join SankofaSpirit Reading Roots™ for an engaging reading and cultural-learning adventure exploring Ghanaian heritage, visual storytelling and gratitude through the original story Ama and the Traveling Cloth.

Designed for learners in grades 3–5, this 45-minute live online class combines literacy, cultural exploration and thoughtful discussion.

As Ama discovers the meaning carried within a special family cloth, learners examine how colors, patterns and Adinkra symbols can communicate ideas, preserve memories and connect generations. Ama’s journey invites students to think more deeply about gratitude and how we can acknowledge the people, traditions and lessons that shape our lives.

During this class, learners will:

  • 📖 Enjoy an interactive reading of Ama and the Traveling Cloth

  • 🇬🇭 Explore Ghana through story, geography and cultural discovery

  • 🧵 Examine Ghanaian cloth, visual patterns and Adinkra symbols

  • 🔎 Interpret how objects and symbols can communicate meaning

  • 💛 Discuss how gratitude can be expressed through words and actions

  • 🌍 Explore connections among family heritage, identity and belonging

  • 💬 Build culturally relevant vocabulary

  • 🤔 Practice comprehension, inference and evidence-based discussion

  • ✍🏾 Complete a printable reflection activity after class

Learners will consider the essential question:

How can the things we create show what—and who—we value?

No prior knowledge of Ghana or Adinkra symbols is required. Learners only need to bring their curiosity, ideas and willingness to participate.

This class is a great fit for students who enjoy stories, art, symbolism, world cultures and meaningful discussions.
