Reading Roots™ Family Showcase: Nia’s Sweetgrass Surprise
Bring the family together for a live cultural reading adventure with SankofaSpirit Reading Roots™!
During this special Family Showcase, children and their grown-ups will explore Gullah Geechee heritage through the original story Nia’s Sweetgrass Surprise.
Set in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Nia’s story follows a young girl learning the art of sweetgrass basketmaking from her grandmother. Along the way, families will discover how knowledge, traditions and family stories can travel from one generation to the next.

During this live family experience, participants will:

This mixed-age showcase uses a K–2 story excerpt with questions and activities that also engage older elementary learners. Younger and older siblings are welcome to participate together.

No previous knowledge is required. Bring your curiosity, your family and something to draw or write with!
