Reading Roots: Nia’s Sweetgrass Surprise 3rd-5th

$20

Join SankofaSpirit Reading Roots™ for an engaging reading and cultural-learning adventure exploring Gullah Geechee heritage through the original story Nia’s Sweetgrass Surprise.

Designed for learners in grades 3–5, this 45-minute live online class combines literacy, cultural exploration and thoughtful discussion.

As Nia learns sweetgrass basketmaking from her grandmother, learners examine how knowledge, skills and family stories travel across generations. The story invites students to consider how people preserve living traditions by learning from others, continuing what they have learned and sharing it with the next generation.

During this class, learners will:

  • 📖 Participate in an interactive reading of Nia’s Sweetgrass Surprise

  • 🌾 Explore Gullah Geechee culture and living traditions

  • 🧺 Examine the cultural and historical importance of sweetgrass basketmaking

  • 🗺️ Locate the South Carolina Lowcountry and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor

  • 🔎 Interpret how objects and traditions can carry family and community stories

  • 💬 Build culturally relevant vocabulary

  • 🤔 Practice comprehension, inference and evidence-based discussion

  • 🔗 Make connections among heritage, identity and belonging

  • 💛 Reflect through NOTICE → WONDER → CONNECT

  • ✨ Consider what it means to LEARN → CARRY → SHARE

  • ✍🏾 Receive a printable take-home reflection activity

Learners will consider the essential question:

How can a tradition carry a story from one generation to the next?

No prior knowledge of Gullah Geechee culture or sweetgrass basketmaking is required. Learners only need to bring their curiosity, ideas and willingness to participate.

This class is a great fit for students who enjoy stories, history, cultural discovery, family connections and meaningful discussions.
