Keeping Your Autistic Child Safe 💙
When your autistic child has little or no understanding of danger, everyday situations can become serious safety concerns. An unlocked door, an open window, a balcony, traffic, water, or just a few seconds out of sight can be frightening for a parent.
I created this guide from one autism parent to another, combining practical safety strategies with my own experience as a mother of autistic children.
Inside, you'll learn practical ways to create layers of protection around your child, including door and window alarms, GPS watches and trackers, wandering/elopement preparation, home safety, road and traffic safety, water safety, communication strategies, safety skills, emergency planning, and practical checklists.
I also share a solution I personally used with my own son: placing an alarm high up on our exterior door so that if he opened the door while I was sleeping, the alarm would immediately sound and wake me.
The goal isn't to frighten our children or take away their independence. It's to protect them today while helping them develop safety skills at their own pace.
💙 Created by an autism mom, for autism parents who understand that sometimes keeping our children safe means thinking one step ahead.
