Does your child seem to cope at school, but come home exhausted, overwhelmed, emotional or ready to explode?

As a mum of four autistic children with more than 25 years of lived experience, I know how confusing and frustrating this can be — especially when you try to explain what you are seeing at home and hear, “We don’t see that at school.”

Behind the Mask is a practical parent guide based on my lived experience of understanding autistic masking and advocating for children whose struggles are not always visible to others.

Inside, I share what I have learned about why autistic children may mask at school, what masking can look like, why everything may come out once they get home, and how parents can help schools understand the bigger picture.

You’ll also get practical tools to help you recognise patterns, document what happens across the whole day, communicate with school, prepare for meetings, and explain masking when your child appears to be “fine.”

I’ve included a whole-day observation plan, practical school-meeting questions and a ready-to-use parent-to-school email template.

This isn’t about blaming parents, teachers or children. It’s about looking beyond what we can immediately see and asking:

What is this child having to work so hard to manage?

💜 Understanding before judgement. Curiosity before blame. Support before crisis.

This is a parent-to-parent lived-experience and educational resource. It is not medical, psychological, diagnostic or legal advice.
