When Behaviour Is Communication

When Behaviour Is Communication

What if your child’s behaviour isn’t the problem — but a message?

As a mum of four autistic children with more than 25 years of lived experience, I’ve learned that meltdowns, shouting, swearing, shutdowns and other intense reactions don’t simply come from nowhere.

There is something behind the behaviour.

Sometimes it may be stress, sensory overload, fear, exhaustion, too many demands, masking, feeling misunderstood, or something that happened hours earlier at school.

In When Behaviour Is Communication, I share what I have learned from raising my own children and using a Low Arousal Approach during difficult moments.

This practical guide will help you understand what may be happening before, during and after a meltdown, how to respond without adding more stress, and why safety and trust should come before trying to correct behaviour.

Inside, I share how I:

• look beyond the outburst to find possible triggers
• recognise early signs of stress and overwhelm
• regulate myself before responding
• use fewer words and reduce pressure during escalation
• handle shouting, swearing and other expressions of distress
• create safety without removing necessary boundaries
• reconnect and communicate after the child is calm
• document patterns using a Before–During–After tool
• communicate with schools when an incident happens
• advocate for my child when others only see the behaviour

One of the biggest things motherhood has taught me is this:

Understanding behaviour does not mean accepting every behaviour. It means looking deeper so we can respond to the child — not only react to the behaviour.

💜 Calm first. Safety first. Understanding before judgement.
