🐓 Mobile Chicken Coop Design Plans

***Early bird special: Right now, these coop design plans are included for free when you enroll in the Raising Layings Hens Course.

Build a rugged, pasture-ready laying coop — straight from our farm to yours.

This mobile chicken coop is built on a 5x8 ft trailer frame and designed for daily movement, predator protection, and efficient pasture rotation. These are the exact plans I use on my own homestead to raise healthy, productive laying hens — and now you can, too.

✅ What You Get:

  • Essential Measurements
All the key dimensions and layout info you need to build with confidence. (Note: trailer sizes vary, so some adjustments may be required based on your specific frame.)

  • Trailer Size & Setup Overview
Details about the 5x8 ft trailer foundation used for the build.

  • Materials List
A complete list of what you’ll need to get started — no guesswork or wasted trips to the store.

  • Component Links
Direct links to the exact hinges, latches, roofing, and hardware I use — saving you time and hassle.

  • Mobility Notes
This coop is designed to be moved using a standard trailer hitch and can be pulled with an ATV, side-by-side, or potentially a riding mower. When the rainwater catchment tank is full, it adds significant weight — so keep that in mind. The trailer-based design allows you to move the coop across varied terrain.

🛠️ Who's This Is For:

  • Homesteaders or small farmers raising laying hens on pasture

  • DIYers who want a field-tested, functional mobile coop

  • Anyone looking to simplify egg production and make pasture rotation easier

If you’re ready to build a coop that works with your land, your flock, and your goals — these plans are for you.

❌ What’s Not Included:

  • Blueprints drawn to architectural scale

  • Laying box designs — we use HenGear rollaway nest boxes, which are sold separately and come in different sizes depending on your flock size

  • Specific instructions for modifying plans to fit different trailer sizes

💬 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What trailer size do I need?

A: The design is based on a 5x8 ft utility trailer but can be adapted to other sizes with some adjustments on your part.

Q: Can I use this for broilers too?

A: You could, but the design is primarily intended for laying hens and includes nesting and roosting features optimized for egg production.

Q: Do I need special tools?

A: Just basic hand and power tools — nothing fancy or commercial-grade.

Q: Is this beginner-friendly?

A: Yes, if you have some basic carpentry skills and are comfortable with measuring, cutting, and assembling materials. These plans provide essential measurements and layout guidance, but they are not step-by-step instructions. Because trailer sizes and frames vary, you may need to make adjustments on your own to fit your specific setup.

Q: Can I reuse a trailer I already have?

A: Absolutely — just be prepared to make necessary adjustments yourself.

Q: Do I have to build the ladder-style roosting bars shown in the plans?

A: Not at all. The ladder-style roosting bars are what I used because we were housing around 70 laying hens at the time, and they needed the extra space. That said, they’re a bit tedious to build and may be overkill for smaller flocks. If you have fewer birds, you can absolutely simplify by installing basic roosting bars along the perimeter of the interior. The roost setup can be adjusted to fit your flock size and your build preferences.
