A sneak peek of what's in the 'Say This, Not That' Christmas Edition of what to swap out for the words we use when we don't know what to say, but we want to say something.
For example when someone has lost someone in their life.... we have no idea what to say at the funeral or when we want to be there for them.
Instead of saying, "I'm sorry for your loss...."
Here's some alternatives:
Three weeks later, when the casseroles have stopped and everyone’s gone back to normal, she isn’t afraid of the grief.
She’s afraid the world is forgetting him.
“Sorry for your loss” talks about the loss.
She’s aching for someone to talk about the person.
So say their name.
And tell her what you remember:
👉“I keep thinking about how Dave laughed at his own jokes before he finished them.”
👉“Your mom hugged me at church every single Sunday. I still look for her.”
👉“I made Jake’s chili tonight. Still the best recipe I’ve ever had.”
Text it. Write it in a card. Bring it up on their birthday, when nobody else will.
It’s the same sympathy, but now she knows they’re not forgotten.
Maybe you’ve been the one who didn’t know what to say, so you said the safe thing or awkward thing (🙋♀️me too).
Or maybe you’re the one who’d give anything to hear their name out loud again.
Either way, this is our sign. For both of us.
