FACE THE MUD

What’s Really Keeping You from Following Through—and How to Break the Pattern

You know what you want to change. So why do you keep ending up in the same place?

It was 8:47 on a Sunday night, and I couldn’t make myself get out of the car.

Thirty-three years of work waited on the other side of that garage door. A career. A family I loved. From the street, I looked like a man who had it all figured out.

But sitting in the dark, one thought finally caught up with me.

I’m living a life that was never meant for me.

Maybe you know that moment. Maybe yours happens at the edge of the bed at five in the morning, in a parking lot before another Monday, or in the quiet after everyone else has gone to sleep.

It is the painful gap between the person you believe God created you to be and the person who shows up in your everyday life.

You have tried to close that gap. New goals. New plans. More discipline. More effort. More promises that this time will be different.

And then something happens.

You lose momentum. You procrastinate. You find a reason to put it off. You quietly walk away from something that mattered.

Eventually, you start asking the question that makes everything worse.

What is wrong with me?

What if you have been asking the wrong question all along?

In Face the Mud, I share the realization that changed how I understood my own struggle with self-sabotage. After thirty-three years as a process engineer, I spent my career diagnosing problems, tracing failures to their root causes, and rebuilding systems that weren't working as they should.

Yet I had never applied that same thinking to my own life.

Until one Sunday night, I finally saw the connection.

A machine that shuts down when it senses danger is not necessarily broken. It may be responding exactly as its safety system was designed to respond.

What if some of the patterns you have been fighting are operating in a similar way?

What you call laziness, procrastination, or weakness may connect to old beliefs and protective responses that once helped you cope but now interfere with the life you want to build.

That does not mean every setback has the same explanation. It means your repeated patterns deserve more than another round of self-criticism.

They deserve to be understood.

That's where your journey begins.

Inside Face the Mud, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize your invisible emergency brake. Understand how familiar patterns can pull you away from meaningful goals, even when you genuinely want to change.

  • Read your setbacks like data, not shame. Stop treating every missed goal as a verdict on your character and begin examining what happens before you give up.

  • Identify the walls holding you back. Explore the SAFE barriers: Self-Belief, Accepting the Status Quo, Fear of the Unknown, and Experiencing Lack of Control.

  • Trace your pattern toward its root. Use the Five Whys to move beyond surface-level excuses and investigate the beliefs and experiences that may be influencing your decisions.

  • Understand the conclusions you drew about yourself. Examine how painful experiences can shape the beliefs you carry into adulthood without confusing what happened to you with who you are.

  • Name the lie and examine its cost. Put the belief into words, recognize how it has affected your life, and begin building a counter-truth grounded in faith and God’s Word.

  • Practice the Sacred Pause. Learn to recognize the space between a trigger and your reaction, giving yourself an opportunity to respond with greater awareness instead of automatically repeating an old pattern.

This book doesn't ask you to read a few inspiring words and hope something changes.

Each chapter includes practical reflection exercises and declarations to help you examine your own experiences, recognize your patterns, and begin applying what you learn.

This book is for you if:

  • You repeatedly start strong but struggle to follow through.

  • You procrastinate on the very goals that matter most to you.

  • You feel capable of more but cannot understand why you keep holding yourself back.

  • You are tired of blaming yourself and being told to simply try harder.

  • You love God, believe you were created for a purpose, and still feel caught in familiar patterns.

  • You are ready to examine what is happening beneath the surface instead of continuing to fight the same symptoms.

Your past may explain a pattern. It does not have to define your future.

The lotus flower does not grow despite the mud. It draws from the very environment that once seemed to bury it and rises toward the light.

Your own journey can begin the same way.

You do not have to pretend the mud was never there. You do not have to condemn the person you became while trying to survive it. You can start by facing the truth, understanding what has held you back, and choosing your next step with faith.

Face the Mud is Book One of the Transcend By Faith Blueprint. It is the beginning of the journey, not a promise that every struggle will disappear overnight. You will begin to identify the patterns, examine the beliefs beneath them, and practice a different response.

You are not doomed to repeat the patterns that have kept you stuck.

You have spent enough time asking what is wrong with you.

It is time to discover what has been driving the pattern.

Face the mud. Find the truth. Take your first step toward the life you were created to live.
